De Bello Belgico or the Dutch war of independence
which saw the rebellion of the United Provinces against Spanish rule turn into a conflict that lasted from 1568 to 1648, when the independence of the United Provinces was sanctioned by the Peace of Westphalia. By Famiano Strada (Rome, 1572-1649), enrolled in the Jesuit Order, teacher of rhetoric in the Roman College, who also carried out political activity, assuming a pro-Spanish position in this work.
For the first decade: Piantanida, 493. For the second decade: Piantanida 495. Graesse, VI/I, 507, noting among others the editio princeps by Corbelletti, 1632-1647, "This famous story came out in two different times, divided into two deca. The first deca goes from the death of Charles V to the year 1575, the second continues until 1590"

The narration of the revolts and wars of Flanders from 1555 to 1590, tendentious but skilful, written with moderation and without polemical violence. There are numerous courtly references to the Farnese family, compensated however, at least in part, by the use of documentary material from those archives.
Strada moves away from the common imitators of Livy for a more modern and lively Latin style. Strada's work achieved considerable diffusion and was translated into the main European languages. Particularly valuable is this edition, illustrated with engravings by the Dutch Romeyn de Hooghe, based on drawings by J. de Ledesma.

Portraits of Contemporary Princes, Involved in the Wars of Liberation from Spanish Domination: Early Reports of the Netherlands' Struggle for Independence Against the Spanish.
Full-page portraits to which is added the title page portraying Victory, laden with spears and coats of arms and the two colored maps.

Strada in composing the "De bello belgico decades duae", obeyed the invitation of Duke Alessandro Farnese of Parma. The narration of the revolts and wars of Flanders from 1555 to 1590 is - basically - tendentious, but skilful, written with moderation and without polemical violence. There are numerous courtly references to the Farnese family, compensated however, at least in part, by the use of documentary material from those archives. Strada moves away from the common imitators of Livy for a more modern and lively Latin style. The work achieved a notable diffusion and was translated into the main European languages.

He had many detractors and critics, first and foremost Cardinal Guido Bentivoglio, who in the same period wrote his work Della Guerra di Fiandra in Italian. Although a friend of Strada, Bentivoglio reproached him for his frequent digressions, and made fun of "that Professor Strada's greatest defect was to go off the road"

The work describes the events that characterized the Dutch war of independence against the Spanish Habsburgs, which lasted from 1555 to 1590. Several editions were printed. This present consists of two volumes printed 13 years apart from each other, but which can be considered part of the same editorial project. This can be seen from the same title page, or frontispiece, and from the fact that there is no second decade impressed by Grignani, nor before Manelfo.
The first decade goes from the death of Charles V to the year 1575, the second continues until 1590.

Work in 2 volumes. Vol.I: pp.(16), 724, (138, Index). Vol.II: pp. (16), 463, (114, Index). Full vellum binding, two gussets on the spine with gilt-stamped titles. Red edges, green ribbon page marker, green capital, marbled endpapers. Printer's brand engraved on the title page, intaglio plate on the frontispiece. Some small holes on the title page of vol. I.
Ex libris manuscript in the buttonhole of vol.II. Woodcut drop caps and finials. Wide margins with author's notes. Intaglio plates with portraits depicting the most famous Belgian - and also Spanish - gentlemen, rulers and generals who played a part in the Dutch War of Independence against Spain (13 in vol.I., 26 in vol.II., some signed from Greuter). Calligrams.
