A COLLECTOR'S COPY OF THE MOST FAMOUS WAR IN HISTORY
History of the Trojan War and the lives of the most illustrious historians of antiquity. This work, which is part of a publishing company called Colla Historica, or Colla Historica dei Greci (historical series of Greek authors), was born from the collaboration of the printer Gabriele Giolito de Ferrari and the humanist Tommaso Porcacchi.
Begun in 1563 and finished in 1574, this enterprise produced seven editions of works by ancient Greek historians translated into the vernacular and five contemporary treatises on the subject of warfare. This collection comprises first an opening letter from the translator Porcacchi to nobleman and patron Silvio Torelli, a detailed summary, and a text addressed to Torelli on the purpose and usefulness of these stories.
A chronological list follows of the celebrated historians whose works this series deals with: Dictys Cretensis and Dares Phrygius (tr. Porcacchi); Herodotus (tr. Remigio Fiorentino); Thucydides (tr. Francesco di Soldo Strozzi from Florence); Senofonte (tr. Ludovico Domenichi da Piacenza) and a piece by a contemporary author such as Gemisto Pletone (tr. Porcacchi); Polybius (trans. Domenichi); Diodorus Siculus (tr. Francesco Baldelli da Cortona); Dionysius of Halicarnassus (tr. Porcacchi); Flavius Josephus (tr. uncertain, probably meaning the author is unknown); Plutarch (tr. Domenichi); Appiano Alessandrino (tr. Lodovico Dolce); Arrianus (tr. Porcacchi) and finally Cassius Dio (tr. Baldelli).
