Illustrated copy with finely hand-coloured engravings of Peacock’s Arthurian satire for children. Written in verse, the narrative of Sir Hornbook follows Childe [i.e. Knight] Lancelot through his linguistic adventures. He engages with grammatically inspired characters such as Sir Syntax, Prosody, Sir Pronoun and Sir Horn-book (a tablet used for studying the alphabet) in exchanges full of humour and wit.

Thomas Love Peacock (1785 - 1866) was a British author know for his satirical novels and focus on dialogues over plot. He was a close friend of Percy Shelley (1792 - 1822), with whom he exchanged ideas and influ-ences. Good. Item #59
